Measuring Your Ceramic Work
Firing inches for wares are calculated by the space that a vessel requires to be fired in the kiln.
Measure each of your pieces with a ruler or measuring tape. You will need to find the length, width, and height of each piece. If your piece is asymmetrically shaped, please use the largest measurements.
If firing multiple pieces, measure and calculate cubic inches for each piece and then add the totals together.
Note that an inch needs to be added to each dimension (height, length, width) for a glaze firing.
Calculate the Volume of Each vessel (in cubic inches)
Bisque Firing = length x width x height
Glaze Firing (requires additional space around each vessel) = (length + 1) x (width +1) x (height +1)
If your total cubic inches are larger than any of the cubic inch price tiers, you will need to calculate cubic feet:
Cubic Feet = total cubic inches ÷ 1728
Bisque Firing Example
Let's say you have two pieces in need of bisque firing. Measure the length, width, and height and calcuate the volume (cubic inches) for each piece.
Bowl: 7 in x 7 in x 4 in = 196 cubic inches
Plate: 10 in x 10 in x 0.5 in = 50 cubic inches
Total size for bisque firing = 196 + 50 = 246 cubic inches
Pricing & Payment
Use the drop-down menu below to find pricing for 246 cubic inches in our electric kiln.
Because the total size is less than 500 cubic inches, the price is calculated per exact cubic inch. Choose "Electric Kiln, Per Cubic Inch — Less than 500 cubic inches" and add a quantity of 246 to your cart. A total of $7.38 (246 x $0.03 per cubic inch) will appear in your cart.
Glaze Firing Example
When you're ready to glaze fire those same two pieces, add 1 inch to each of the dimensions and calcuate cubic inches.
Bowl: (7 in + 1) x (7 in + 1) x (4 in + 1) = 8 x 8 x 5 = 320 cubic inches
Plate: (10 in + 1) x (10 in + 1) x (0.5 + 1) in = 11 x 11 x 1.5 = 181.5 cubic inches
Total size for glaze firing = 320 + 181.5 = 501.5 cubic inches
Pricing & Payment
You have chosen to soda fire your glazed pieces. Use the drop-down menu below to find pricing for 501.5 cubic inches in the soda kiln. Measurements greater than 500 cubic inches are priced in tiers. Choose "Soda Kiln, Small — 500–750 cubic inches" and add a quantity of one to your cart.
Soda firing price = $25
If you are firing multiple pieces, keep a running total of the cubic inches for each piece, and add them together. Our kilns are different sizes, and we have carefully calculated price breaks based on the percentage of the kiln occupied. Glaze firing requires additional space around each vessel.
