In 1997 Paul Chojnowski returned to his native Berkshires where he continues to maintain a studio while residing in Amherst, Massachusetts. His first solo exhibition in New York was at Bridgewater, Lustberg & Blumenfeld Gallery in 1999. Since then, his work has been exhibited in solo and group venues and acquired for public and private collections in New York, Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and London UK.
Amongst numerous grants and awards, Chojnowski was one of six recipients of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in Drawing in 2018. In 2019 he was selected as an Artist in Residence at Shenandoah National Park, Luray, Virginia where he explored and created new work in September 2020.
A distinguishing characteristic throughout Chojnowski’s career has been his use of nontraditional media and tools in his art making. He began burning and scorching wood and paper to create drawings in the early 1990’s. His current works are large scale landscapes incorporating aniline dyes and watercolors on burned, scorched and sanded birch plywood and pine boards.
Chojnowski is represented regionally by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NewYork where his work was exhibited in “Light of Day” from December 2022 through January 2023.
