Join IS183 Art School for an opening reception of the second annual Collage Marathon Exhibition on Thursday, May 12th, from 5:30-7pm in IS183’s Stairwell Gallery in Stockbridge.
Twelve artists from the Berkshires and beyond gathered in-person at IS183’s studios, with some participating virtually, for two-day event of making collages centered around a common theme of “Renewal and Acts of Hope” in celebration of World Collage Day happening on Saturday, May 14th.
Initiated by Kolaj Magazine in 2018, World Collage Day is about artists connecting across borders against a global context of entrenchment and separation. And the day is about an art medium that excels at bringing different things together to create new forms and new ways of thinking. Ric Kasini Kadour, the editor of Kolaj Magazine, writes, “We created World Collage Day because we wanted to honor this community of artists and to remind the world what a spirit of cooperation, mutual support, and creativity can look like.”
This year's featured artist from Kolaj Magazine is Erin McCluskey Wheeler. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, she is a painter, collagist, writer, curator, and teacher whose work is “all about reinvention and restoration.” Often using papers sourced from other artists, her students, and collaborators, she “cuts up, groups and rearranges her paintings on paper and found papers in a process of transformation, an intentional act of breaking apart and putting things back together.”
IS183’s Collage Marathon Exhibition is on view through May 31.
