Atwood’s work investigates how we perceive the world beyond our immediate reality, while Balken’s artistic output is a study of persona, self and consciousness, and how spiritual emergence of the self unfolds over time. Their collaborative installation explores these themes. “After months of reading and talking about salt, its literal and metaphorical properties, Beck and I brought the work we had made together. I used the month of the residency to make my work. It was unusual for me not to "be prepared" ahead of time. This project was presented in 2013.” - Cynthia Atwood
