There are so many ways to transform the straight sided cylinder. By cutting and tucking your clay, you can create a dynamic form.What happens when you add altered clay components to one another? You can create complex forms, such as, bottles, tea pots and pitchers. In addition, learn the art of gently stretching slabs to volume to your pots. Beginners welcome!
Safe social distance glazing will be available as well as virtual Office Hour sessions to meet with the instructor independently outside of class time. (Office Hours: one half-hour session per student is included with tuition — details on how to schedule TBA upon registration)
Materials
IS183 will provide a sleeve of clay (please see below and add to your cart) to be picked up by arrangement from IS183's ramp. The instructor has provided a list of basic hand building tools (listed below) which can be purchased from Sheffield Pottery. If you have previously borrowed a clay tool kit from IS183, that may be kept for continued use this session.

Please note: you may have similar substitute items at home, which will be fine to use. Paula can also suggest substitutes for all items below if you are on a tight budget!
wire tool (or fishing line)
rolling pin (18- or 24-inch ideal) OR 24-inch x 2-inch dowel
small sponge (can be cut from a regular kitchen sponge)
2 guide sticks (can use 2 large paint stirring sticks or two 1/4-inch dowels, square or round)
non-stick work surface — (roughly) 24 x 24-inch board or larger to work on. 3/4-inch plywood or hardi board or slab mat or heavy duty canvas
Optional
2 oz. Velvet Underglaze (2–4 colors)
banding wheel (range from $19 up)
There is a materials/firing fee is for every 25 lbs (sleeve) of clay used. This fee goes towards glaze materials and firing costs (fuel, electricity, etc). Choose from white, red, porcelain or reclaimed (mix of camp and white) clay. More clay can be purchased if needed.
Due to the rise in cost from the supplier, Berkshire Art Center has raised the price of clay as of 9/21/2023.
NOTE: Porcelain Clay is currently out of stock as of November 5th, 2024.

Online Classes at IS183
Register for a class (or series) on our website, and we will email you a Zoom meeting link along with instructions. Simply use the link to join the online class at the designated time! Download the Zoom app on your smartphone or tablet, or use your laptop/desktop web browser. The web browser client will download automatically when you join your first Zoom meeting. You will join a live, interactive lesson presented in real-time by an IS183 Faculty Artist. Small class sizes will allow you to engage personally with the instructor and other students, just like in the studio! Faculty lessons will primarily be demonstration-based, but may have segments in which students are challenged to work on independent assignments. Each class and faculty approach will be unique!
