The Brothership Building Window curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires will feature Postapocalypse and Calculation by Rosemary Lamiacae for the month of August.
ARTIST BIO: Rosemary is an apprentice weaver interested in emergence, rhythm, and functional textiles. Meet me in the loom, their solo practice, is an invitation to gather at the intersection point of many different material agencies and historical forces. They have studied at the Marshfield School of Weaving and Penland School of Craft, and were a recent fellow of the Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute.
ARTIST STATEMENT: Taking someone at face value, judging a book by its cover, having a superficial impression: these sayings caution against things that appear on the surface. Perhaps they are deceptive, or simplistic, or don't get to the heart of the matter. In my work, I come from a different place— I believe surfaces are important places for conveying meaning, interfacing with others, and shapeshifting. The textiles on view here are selections from my first two years of exploring how to make new surfaces and what they can do. They were handwoven with wool, cotton, and linen, on and in collaboration with centuries-old looms. Covering a range of familiar structures, including plain weave, twill, M's & O's, waffle weave, and lace, I try to take these techniques in new directions through juxtaposition, color, and construction. Here, I focused on the meaning that adorns a body (mine or another's) in encounters with the world, giving primacy to the feelings that arise in the event of wearing/perceiving. For example: identification, surprise, attraction, confusion, or kinship. What do you want to feel?
