Inspired by Tibetan prayer flags, these colorful printed flags can represent anything that’s meaningful to you. For this workshop, I will lead you through the steps of designing and making the blocks, and then sewing the prints into a banner.
Traditional flags are meant to slowly come apart in the wind and weather, releasing your wishes into the air, though they can be hung anywhere.
We will discuss methods for choosing and transferring your designs onto Soft-Kut, and how to print your creations by hand onto fabric. You can also choose to print them on rice paper, for an indoors-only version. They can be sewn by hand or by machine, bound with a border or affixed to a cord for a quick low-sew version! Fun, flexible and fabulous!
No drawing experience necessary!
Suggested Materials
fabric — muslin preferred, or white sheets (1 yard)
block printing ink — student choice of 1 to 5 colors (blue, silver, red, green, yellow suggested for a more traditional prayer flag configuration)
needle and thread — or a sewing machine
iron
jute twine or twine of choice if student chooses not to sew
a binding pencil eraser

Online Classes at IS183
Register for a class (or series) on our website, and we will email you a Zoom meeting link along with instructions. Simply use the link to join the online class at the designated time! Download the Zoom app on your smartphone or tablet, or use your laptop/desktop web browser. The web browser client will download automatically when you join your first Zoom meeting. (Have a look at this Zoom overview.)
You will join a live, interactive lesson presented in real-time by an IS183 Faculty Artist. Small class sizes will allow you to engage personally with the instructor and other students, just like in the studio! Faculty lessons will primarily be demonstration-based, but may have segments in which students are challenged to work on independent assignments. Each class and faculty approach will be unique!
