Lily will discuss how the work of science fiction writer Octavia Butler inspires her soft sculpture environments and performances within them. Lily's work is not a direct narrative of Butler's but rather uses Butler as a jumping off point for exploration of the creation of worlds.

Lily Erb is a queer maker from Charlottesville, Virginia. Lily received her BFA from Hampshire College in Sculpture and Printmaking and is currently in the Sculpture + Extended Practice MFA program at Ohio University. Lily spent the first eight years of her creative career working almost exclusively with steel after signing up for a welding class in college and falling in love with welding. She has been focusing on creating soft sculpture after a discovered love of sewing while in residence at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in the fall of 2018. Other residencies Lily attended are Yellow Bird Art Park, Wabi Sabi Thrift Store, and Paducah A.I.R. Public art pieces include, decorative panels for The Paramount, Vita Nova, Tastings, and Splendora's as well as Extended Chaos in Paducah, KY and Clothing Rack Bike Rack in Moab, UT.

Online Classes at IS183

Register for a class (or series) on our website, and we will email you a Zoom meeting link along with instructions. Simply use the link to join the online class at the designated time! Download the Zoom app on your smartphone or tablet, or use your laptop/desktop web browser. The web browser client will download automatically when you join your first Zoom meeting. (Have a look at this Zoom overview.)

You will join a live, interactive lesson presented in real-time by an IS183 Faculty Artist. Small class sizes will allow you to engage personally with the instructor and other students, just like in the studio! Faculty lessons will primarily be demonstration-based, but may have segments in which students are challenged to work on independent assignments. Each class and faculty approach will be unique!

Thank you for continuing to make art and support IS183 Art School! We look forward to seeing you in the (virtual) studios!
