This class is for students who are familiar with the basic handbuilding methods of coil, pinch, and slab construction and would like to advance their technique in these areas. During this 7 week course, students will be encouraged to narrow their focus and work on a cohesive series. Individual attention and group discussions of design elements along with observation of historical and contemporary ceramics will help to guide students towards developing a strong personal style. While ideal for those with some experience, all levels of students are welcome and all will be guided at their level.
Office Hour sessions to meet with the instructor independently outside of class time are available. (Office Hours: one half-hour session per student is included with tuition -- details on how to schedule TBA upon registration)
Each student (age 14+) is required to have a current Proof of Vaccination Form on file with IS183. Please fill out and submit a form prior to the first day of your class.
CLASS MATERIALS
Materials List: Beyond the Basics: Handbuilding II 2022
Students registering for this class must purchase the Ceramics Class Materials Fee including clay, glazing, and firing (unless you have leftover clay purchased from IS183 in the last year). Students in this intermediate/advanced class may select the clay body of their choice from the available options.
There is a materials/firing fee is for every 25 lbs (sleeve) of clay used. This fee goes towards glaze materials and firing costs (fuel, electricity, etc). Choose from white, red, porcelain or reclaimed (mix of camp and white) clay. More clay can be purchased if needed.
Due to the rise in cost from the supplier, Berkshire Art Center has raised the price of clay as of 9/21/2023.
NOTE: Porcelain Clay is currently out of stock as of November 5th, 2024.
