Class Date: July 23, 2023

Learn the many variables associated with pit firing that create exciting one-of-a-kind atmospheric layers of carbon and sulfate colors. Use the elements of earth, fire, minerals and organic matter to imprint designs on your ceramics.
Students must pick up their work following the class at BAC beginning on Monday, July 24th.
(In the event that BAC has to cancel class due to weather or facility emergencies, please note students will be notified of a make up via email. More information on our policies for cancellations can be found HERE.)
Beginning January 2023, proof of vaccination is no longer required for this class. Masks will continue to be optional, but encouraged for this class. Please review updated COVID Safety Plan HERE.
CLASS MATERIALS
A materials fee has been included in the cost of tuition and all pit firing materials and equipment will be provided. Students should bring approx. 3-4 bisque fired pieces to fire as part of this workshop. Ceramic forms have a risk of thermal shock breakage when firing in a wood pit. Thin even walls and forms that curve inward have more of a survival rate than flat forms. Vase forms and collared pillow forms survive the thermal shock process because the forms hold the heat longer. Creating a range of shapes and sizes will increase your chance of success. Consider burnishing some forms during the leather-hard stage.
