With step by step instruction, learn to make mugs, Japanese tea bowls, and tiny espresso cups. We will examine the anatomy of a mug: base, body, handle and rim, in order to gain an understanding of form and function. Learn to texture and stretch soft slabs to create an elegant yumomi. Try your hand at pinching a rugged chawan or a delicate espresso cup. Finish your vessels with our cone 6 glazes in our electric, soda or gas firing. Open to all levels.

(In the event that BAC has to cancel a class session due to weather or facility emergencies, please note the pre-scheduled makeup date for this course will be Tuesday, August 16. More information on our policies for cancellations can be found HERE.)

Each student (age 14+) is required to have a current Proof of Vaccination Form on file with BAC. Please fill out and submit a form prior to the first day of your class.

Masks will be mandatory for this class with Paula Shalan at this time. Please review updated COVID Safety Plan HERE.

  • Students registering for this class must purchase the Ceramics Class Materials Fee including clay, glazing, and firing (unless you have leftover clay purchased from BAC in the last year). Intermediate/Advanced students may select the clay type of their choice.

There is a materials/firing fee is for every 25 lbs (sleeve) of clay used. This fee goes towards glaze materials and firing costs (fuel, electricity, etc). Choose from white, red, porcelain or reclaimed (mix of camp and white) clay. More clay can be purchased if needed.

Due to the rise in cost from the supplier, Berkshire Art Center has raised the price of clay as of 9/21/2023.
